Our top 10 attractions to visit whilst camping in Cheddar

Cheddar may be most famous for its Cheddar Cheese, caves and clifftop walks, but this picturesque Somerset village has much more to offer.

Book your next camping trip at our Cheddar campsite, the Rodney Stoke Caravan and Camping Park and read on for our top 10 visitor attractions in Cheddar.

1. Cheddar Gorge and Caves

An international centre for caving and rock climbing, Cheddar Gorge and Caves are less than 3 miles from our campsite, offering numerous attractions including cliff-top walks, rock climbing and the Museum of pre-history.

At 400ft deep and 3 miles long, the Gorge is one of Britain’s most spectacular natural landmarks – and areas of the mysterious caves are over 500,000 years old! With over 20 different attractions, Cheddar Gorge and Caves are definitely worth a visit.

2. The Original Cheddar Cheese Company

No trip to Cheddar would be complete without sampling some local Cheddar Cheese!

Pay a visit to the Original Cheddar Cheese Company, the oldest Cheddar cheese shop in the world, and you’ll find a fantastic selection of farmhouse cider, chutneys, pickles and cheeses, including traditional cloth matured farmhouse cheese!

3. Cheddar Village

Picturesque Cheddar village is well worth exploring. There are plenty of tearooms, restaurants, pubs and shops where you can pick up souvenirs, walking gear and, of course, more Cheddar cheese!

The lower gorge (on your way out of the village) also boasts a series of mini waterfalls as you head towards the Cliff Road, and the Market Cross dates back to the fifteenth century.

4. Cheddar Reservoir

Supplied with water from the Cheddar Yeo River in Cheddar Gorge, Cheddar Reservoir is perfect for visitors who want to try their hand at some managed water sports! Paddle boarding, kayaking and canoeing are just some of the activities on offer through the Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club.

Known for its large Pike, Tench, Perch and Eels, Cheddar Reservoir is also a great fishing location. Day tickets are just £6 per day (April 2022) and must be purchased in advance.

5. Cheddar Crazy Golf

Fun for all ages! With spectacular views, Cheddar Crazy Golf is located in the heart of Cheddar Gorge, opposite Jacob’s Ladder.

Constructed using natural water worn stone from Cheddar Gorge, the 18-hole miniature golf course even has its own water feature!

6. Cheddar Ales

Located at Winchester Farm on the edge of Cheddar Village, Cheddar Ales is an independent artisanal brewery who produce a fantastic range of regular and seasonal beers.

The tap room is an easy stroll from the village, serving a fabulous range of Cheddar ales plus local cider and gin. Brewery tours can also be arranged for larger groups and can be tailored to your every whim!

7. The Cider Barn

The Cider Barn is located just one mile from our Cheddar campsite, serving some great locally produced cider, classic pub snacks and an array or sourdough pizzas.

Priding themselves on their eccentric appearance, The Cider Barn is a fun place to visit!

8. St Andrew's Church

Visitors with an interest in local history may like to spend some time at St Andrew’s Church.

Dating back to the 14th century, The Church of St Andrew in Cheddar contains some beautiful 15th century stained glass and the alter table is of the 1600’s. There are several memorials for servicemen in the graveyard and the chest tomb is believed to be to Sir Thomas Cheddar and is dated 1442.

9. Cheddar Boot Sale and Market

Located at Winchester Farm, just one mile from Cheddar Gorge, Cheddar Boot Sale and Market is open every Sunday.

With indoor and outdoor pitches, on-site parking, a large café, ice cream van and regular butchers, greengrocers, baker and cheesemongers, browsing the wares at Cheddar Market is a fantastic way to spend your morning or afternoon.

10. The Strawberry Line

Named after the delicious strawberries that this former railway line transported from Cheddar for nearly a century, The Strawberry Line is approx. 10 miles of (mainly) traffic free cycle path.

Running from Yatton Railway Station to Cheddar, you’ll pass cider apple orchards, wooded valleys and the spectacular Cheddar Gorge.
