Six months have passed since we shared our
Green Goals for 2024 and we continue to make fantastic progress!
Between January and March 2024, we measurably reduced our plastic footprint, began recycling food waste, partnered with Brean Bike Hire, supported North Somerset Councils ‘Greening the Hight Street’ initiative and planted 10,000 native hedging plants and 40 trees - read our Quarter 1 Updates for more info.
And our momentum hasn’t slowed during the spring! Over the last 3 months;
1. Single-Use Plastic
Our popular Riverside Holiday Village has achieved ‘Plastic Free Champion’ status.
Launched by Surfers Against Sewage and supported by Cleaner Coastlines and Plastic Free Weston-super-Mare, the Plastic Free Champion Award is presented to businesses who demonstrate their commitment to tackling single-use plastic items in their business.
Visitors to the Kingfisher Club at Riverside Holiday Village will notice that we have replaced plastic takeaway boxes and cutlery with eco-friendly recyclable takeaway boxes and compostable wooden cutlery. Plastic coffee cups have been eliminated, and single-use plastic condiment sachets have been replaced with a refillable ‘pump-station’ with paper cups.
2. Conservation of Wildlife and Biodiversity
We have successfully completed the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous ‘Tree-mendous’ Challenge.
The David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature is an exciting scheme which allows holiday parks across Great Britain to demonstrate their commitment to helping our native wildlife. To complete the ‘Tree-mendous’ challenge, parks have to demonstrate that they have planted native trees - and that’s exactly what we’ve done - 40 of them, plus 10,000 native hedging plants! Find out more about our Riverbank Regeneration Project.
Additionally, in our ongoing commitment to support the increase in biodiversity at our holiday parks, 28 apple trees have been planted at Edithmead Leisure and Park Homes which, in time, will become a community orchard.
3. Renewable Energy and Carbon Management
Unfortunately, feasibility studies into the suitability of utilising hydro and wind energy at several of our parks have proven both options to be unsuitable. However, not to be beaten, we are now assessing the opportunity for EV charging solutions, beginning with Riverside Holiday Village and Edithmead Leisure and Park Homes.
4. Community Projects
Aiming to support new mums, Riverside Holiday Village has joined the North Somerset Breast Feeding Welcome Scheme. Run by North Somerset Council, the scheme highlights venues (like Riverside) where women can comfortably breastfeed.
So, as you can see, we’re well on our way to meeting our Green Goals for 2024 and we look forward to updating you of our progress later in the year.
